A brief History of the International College of Dentists (ICD)

The International College of Dentists (ICD), founded in 1920, is a leading global dental organization dedicated to advancing international dental care. Initially formed to unite top dental experts to improve public oral health, ICD's mission includes promoting scientific advancements, professional ethics, and global cooperation. Originally focused on North American members, ICD quickly expanded worldwide. Today, ICD is a large international body with members from various dental fields, recognized for its significant contributions to dental education, research, and the enhancement of global dental care standards over its 104 years of history.

About the ICD:
A Century of Excellence 

Founded in 1920, the ICD is the largest and oldest global dental honor society, with a membership of over 12,000 Fellows from more than 140 countries. The College was conceived in Tokyo by Dr. Louis Ottofy and 

Dr. Tsurukichi Okumura with a vision to create an international organization that would advance the dental profession through education, recognition of outstanding service, and the promotion of humanitarian efforts. 

 

Since its inception, the ICD has grown to establish autonomous sections across the globe, reflecting its commitment to fostering professional excellence and collegiality among dental practitioners. Each year, the ICD continues to make significant contributions to the field, including:

  • 1934: Formation of the first autonomous section in the USA, setting a precedent for international collaboration. 

  • 1958: Establishment of the Japan Section and the introduction of the official Convocation ceremony. 

  • 1964-1967: Expansion into the Asia-Pacific region, including the formation of the Australian and Indian sections. 

  • 2017: Recognizing the growing influence and contributions of dentists in our region, ICD Section XV was established as an autonomous section. This marked a significant milestone in our history, allowing us to better serve the dental community in the Asia – Pacific region. 

  • 2020: The ICD celebrated its centennial anniversary, marking 100 years of contributions to dental science and humanitarian efforts worldwide.

Section XV was officially installed as an autonomous Section on October 7, 2017, by President Rajesh Chandna, President Elect Dr. Clive Ross, and Secretary General Dr. John Hinterman during the 4th ICD Section XV Conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, at University Technology Malaysia. Section XV owes its foundation to the visionary leadership of Adjunct Professor Dato’ Dr. How Kim Chuan, Prof. John Ling, Dr. William Cheung, and Prof. Leung Wai Keung.

ICD is divided into 16 Sections. Section XV comprises Afghanistan, Brunei, Cambodia, Hong Kong SAR, Indonesia, Laos, Macau SAR, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and Uzbekistan. Adjunct Prof. Dato’ Dr. How Kim Chuan is the current President of ICD Section XV.

THE MEANING OF ICD FELLOWSHIP: Global Citizenship

The International College of Dentists (ICD) plays a vital role in promoting global citizenship in the dental profession, recognizing outstanding achievements in leadership, education, research, and humanitarian service. ICD Fellowship is a singular honor, conferred through a rigorous peer-review process, and involves an induction fee that supports the costs of ceremonies and events. However, the true value of Fellowship lies in what one gives back and the opportunity to become a global citizen in dentistry.

ICD embodies global citizenship through its five core values:

  1. Leadership: In 2021, ICD earned Special Consultative Status with the UN's Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), allowing it to provide expert analysis on oral health, raise awareness, and contribute to UN goals.

  2. Recognition: For nearly a century, ICD has honored the top one percent of dentists worldwide, each selected through a stringent review process.

  3. Humanitarianism: ICD Fellows lead and support hundreds of dental humanitarian projects globally, leveraging the collective talent and dedication of its members.

  4. Education: Launched in 2020, ICD Online offers educational content, including accredited continuing education, supporting global dental knowledge exchange.

  5. International Professional Relations: ICD fosters international cooperation and upholds the highest professional standards through its global network of Fellows, enhancing the profession's reputation worldwide.

  • Journal of International College of Dentists (JICD): This bi-annual publication is highly regarded by Indian dental researchers and recognized by the Dental Council of India.

 

Community Health Projects: ICD has initiated efforts to bring quality dental care to rural and underprivileged populations in India.
